The holiday season is upon us and if you are looking for some exquisite and uber-luxe gifts for your loved ones and for yourself then head to The One Amazing Thing Shop in Mumbai this weekend. Spearheaded by the Brown Paper Bag duo — Kanika Parab and Mansi Poddar and presented by Fila, this pop up at Jamaat in Colaba (bang opposite Abode hotel) has a touch of luxe and retro in equal measures. Think vegan lipsticks, nose pins, fragrances, organic detergent, vinyls, vintage fashion (we have our eyes on that Burberry trench coat as we write).
“After the success of The Coup Card, we were looking to do something in the retail space. The idea behind The One Amazing Thing came from this thought of wanting to create something exclusive and unique in terms of an edit. Essentially the idea is very visceral — if I want to buy that product, it is there on the shelf,” says Poddar.
Vintage and Vegan
Within two weeks, the duo managed to collaborate with the who’s who of the fashion-and-art scene, including Ekta Rajani for the fashion edit, Roohi Jaikshan for the vintage edit, while Prutha Raithatha gave the space a look of a permanent store. Lending the pop-up its ‘glow’ is artist Lekha Washington’s neon-lit clothes racks as well as the bling couch. “We have always lamented about the state of retail in Mumbai, there aren’t those many outlets to go to. We really felt that we needed to do something fun around the holidays. It literally started from the discussion, as to where we could buy a party dress!” enthuses Poddar.
Here’s a sneak-peek at The One Amazing Thing Shop
Art By Rid Burman
Burman is one of the finest fashion photographers in the country, thanks to his keen eye for portraits. While you might have seen his work in magazines, this is the first time that he will be showing his work. On display at the pop-up are his pictures from his latest series, ‘August,’ shot in Greece with his partner Laura.
When it comes to vintage, Roohi Jaikishan has a keen eye for the art. For The One Amazing Thing Shop, she has pulled together a collection of vintage clothes that feature brands such as Chanel, Mami, Missoni, Burberry, Miu Miu, Alexander McQueen to name a few. While the edit promotes sustainable fashion, the proceeds will go to a charity.
Yes, you read that right. Sabrina Suhail is a Bangalore-based make-up artist known for making the country’s maiden bespoke lipsticks. Being compassionate towards animals, her make-up is vegan, cruelty-free and natural. You can buy her lipstick and eyelashes at the store. Love deep reds? Then that is the only shade you will find here as that is the one the BPP girls swear by.
Bringing together the fashion edit for The One Amazing Thing Shop is Ekta Rajani. At its core, the idea behind the fashion section was to bring back some of the team’s favourite brands, introduce new people to the fashionistas and also get access to stuff that you can’t get anywhere else. In a nutshell, what you see at the store, are probably the only pieces by the designers in the city. You can shop for Rahul Mishra’s Paris line, get access to exclusive designs by Savio Jon, Rimzim Dadu, Aishwarya Nair’s Aligne Studio, et al.
Translating your love for design into concrete jewellery is Material Immaterial. The studio will be showing their special collection — Chimera, an architectural jewellery series. You can buy earrings shaped like a stairwell or a neckpiece showing a cross-section of a building, all made of concrete.
Chemical Free Soaps
At the pop-up, you will spot a bathtub stocked with soap bars and detergent. These are from Bangalore-based brand called Common Oxen. The ingredients used in the making of these soaps are natural, making it safe for home use. The soaps are infused with a wide selection of botanicals, lending them a pleasant fragrance.
If you follow the duo on their social media accounts, you must know that they love to read. Together they have sourced some of their favourite titles for the pop-up shop. If you are looking for some recommendation for a book challenge next year, The One Amazing Thing Shop has you covered.
